According to a recent Gallup poll, conducted August 1-23, 2022, “Americans have become less content in recent years with the quality of the nation's K-12 education.” Only forty-two percent (42%) say they are “satisfied” today. This is the lowest ever measured in the past two decades by Gallup by one percentage point and the second-lowest reading in Gallup's 23-year trend. Americans' satisfaction with schools was at a near-record high of 51% in 2019 before dropping slightly each year since.  Notwithstanding this, according to Gallup, “parents of children attending kindergarten through grade 12 remain largely content with their oldest child's education.” The 80% who are completely or somewhat satisfied is improved from the 73% measured a year ago and exceeds the average of 76% that Gallup has recorded since 2001.  Again, according to Gallup, the reduction in satisfaction lies mostly among “Republicans and Republican-leaning independents,” since President Donald Trump left office, while “Democrats' satisfaction has remained fairly stable.”  From 2017 to 2020, Republicans and Democrats expressed similar levels of satisfaction -- on average 46% of Republicans/Republican-leaners and 50% of Democrats/Democratic-leaners were satisfied. The Gallup poll indicates Republicans' satisfaction dropped to 35% last year and is 30% today, while Democrats’ satisfaction has been in the 51% to 57% range.  For Republicans/Republican-leaners, the top five reasons for the dissatisfaction are: (1) poor/outdated curriculum (15%); (2)  poor quality of education/outranked by other countries (12%), (3) lack of teaching basics/reading/writing/arithmetic (11%), (4) political agendas being taught (10%), and not learning life skills (9%).  See the charts and graphs posted to my Facebook page.

One of my campaign platforms is to ban all political displays by teachers and administrators, to include flags—other than the American flag and the State of North Carolina flag—clothing, pins, slogans, etc., from Guilford County schools, on the grounds that politics are divisive. Our students should not be at the mercy of schools spouting the political views of only the teachers or administrators. Leftists would say the American flag does that, too! But as a proud American, I would not be one of them. So, it was with interest that I read about the Kettle Moraine School Board in Wales, Wisconsin, voting last week to bar teachers from displaying “political flags or religious messaging in their classroom or on their person.” Everything from the BLM and LGBT flags to “We Back the Badge” logos are not allowed, and only one member voted against the move. Teachers are also banned from displaying their preferred pronouns in emails. According to the article at the RepublicanPost.net, the school’s “existing policy continues to prohibit employees from taking advantage of their positions of trust to promote partisan politics, religious views, and propaganda.”  As also stated by the RepublicanPost.net, “[t]he purpose of public education is being rewritten by liberals in America. No longer is the argument over testing standards or even Common Core. Rather, it is whether educators have the right to unfettered indoctrination of children, with or without their parents’ consent.”  Be warned, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) opposes the ban.

OK, so back in 2017, a social justice teacher at a Los Angeles school thought having Black children “pick cotton” from a field on school property was not only a clever idea, but it would also give such students the actual experience of being a slave!  The mother of an elementary school Black female student discovered this as a result in her child’s behavior and has sued the school, the principal, and the teacher for the infliction of emotional distress, indicating that her daughter continues to be traumatized by the events.

I just do not know what to say about this. But, if I did, it would not be good! The contract between the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers’ union and a school district requires “white” teachers to be laid off or reassigned first “before colored teachers” (my words), so writes Asher Notheis, in the Washington Examiner. This agreement was reached on March 25, 2022, to end a 14-day teacher strike. This is the actual language in the agreement: “Starting with the Spring 2023 Budget Tie-Out Cycle, if excessing a teacher who is a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the site, the district shall excess the next least senior teacher, who is not a member of an underrepresented population.”  There are more discriminatory provisions within the agreement which favor colored teachers, but you will have to read them for yourselves!

Nancy Andersen, writing at AmericanThinker.com, believes “North Carolina is ground zero for the battle over woke primary education at the state level.”  She also writes “[t]he state’s education board is majority progressive with one appointed member an anti-racist activist who openly supports the Black Panther-founded Rainbow Coalition of the 60s. The North Carolina State Board of Education meeting room prominently displays the Robert Wood Johnson Health Equity Infographic as an official logo,” and “[t]he elected Republican education superintendent supports CASEL Social Emotional Learning and employs the leftist tactics of redefining terms when supporting equity practices in education….”  Ms. Andersen also writes that “[a]lthough many Americans think of North Carolina as Red; the state has perhaps the most progressive education system in the United States.” (Emphasis is mine.) The 2021 Social Studies Standards have been criticized as “unproductive, regressive and unhelpful to the students,’ and radical concepts behind “gender identity have long been included in North Carolina’s educational system, and not just at the local level.” Currently the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is reviewing and updating its Healthful Living Standards. The administrator overseeing these standards is Chief of NC Healthy Schools, Ellen Essick, Ph.D., who introduced the “Genderbread Person” and the “Gender Unicorn” as early as 2015 on behalf of the NCDPI as legitimate educational resources during the state education agency’s Collaborative Conference for Student Achievement and other education meetings. Her slides included “Getting to Know Gender-Neutral Pronouns” and “pictures of an innocent little boy holding a doll with the title, ‘Trans-Positive.’”  Moreover, the North Carolina “Governor’ School Program,” supposedly allows “progressive state activists to indoctrinate high school students away from family, for the program occurs over five weeks as a summer residential experience on selected NC college campuses.”  Curricula at this state program – “kept secret from parents” according to Ms. Andersen -- included power-points of “harmful binary gender norms” and surveys based on the Flying Gender Unicorn, a graphic developed by an Associate Director of LGBTQ Initiatives at Florida International University.”  A final tidbit from Ms. Andersen’s article: “North Carolina citizens are not just paying for Leftist indoctrination in their schools, however. Now taxpayers will be footing the bill for children of state employees to receive controversial “puberty-delaying treatment” and sex transition surgeries.”

A return to teaching children how to read phonetically is producing extraordinarily successful outcomes as they engage in efforts to catch up on learning loss after the pandemic, says Catherine Truitt, Superintendent, NC Department of Public Instruction. There was a time when kids “learned how to read by learning letter sounds and how to string words together, also known as phonics.”  Unfortunately, all, or most, school systems moved away from this approach to early literacy instruction and turned to teaching whole language instruction. Whole language instruction has a person look at a word, look at the shapes of the letters, and memorize the word. No wonder NC schools have seen dismal performances in reading proficiency. The statistics indicate that teaching phonics works. “At the beginning of the school year, coming out of the pandemic, only 27% of kindergarteners were proficient in kindergarten reading standards. But, by the end-of-year, 67% were proficient in reading for the school year ending in June. Only 38% of first graders coming into the 2021-22 school year were proficient compared to 63% that were proficient at the end of the school year.”  Ms. Truitt credits bipartisan legislation passed in April 2021 that included the “Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling or LETRS” for a return to a phonics-based approach to reading. Teachers of reading and spelling will undergo “180 hours of professional development” to “retrain all of our Pre-K-fifth grade teachers on how to teach reading to young students.”

A July 17 article by A. P. Dillon, on Substack.com, tackles the line spouted ad nauseum by many progressive teachers: “Critical Race Theory is not being used or taught in K-12 schools.”  Except that it is! A 2022 report by the Rand Corporation, titled “A Snapshot of Anti-bias Education in U.S. K-12 Schools”, shows that three out of four teachers reported providing “anti-bias instruction” in their classrooms. The survey was administered through the “American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative sample of K–12 public school teachers (i.e., 7,200) across the country.”  The report defines "anti-bias" as centering on the domains of "identity, diversity, justice, and action," all of which are components of Critical Race Theory (CRT). These teachers commonly used Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curricula for that purpose. The statistics reported within the report and by Ms. Dillon are staggering:  (1) "84 percent of novice teachers in their first three years of teaching reported engaging in anti-bias education, compared with 70 percent of veteran teachers with more than 20 years of experience,” (2) "75% percent of female teachers reported engaging in anti-bias education, compared with 65 percent of male teachers,” (3) “69 percent of Black or African American teachers reported engaging in anti-bias education, in comparison with 73 percent of non-Black or non–African American teachers," and (4) only 27 percent of the survey respondents reported not providing anti-bias instruction at all. The remaining 71 percent of teachers said they engaged in anti-bias education to a “small, moderate, or large extent."  Other key findings include teachers using a wide variety of material, including some they created themselves, some material they found, or materials provided to them by the school district; and, a greater percentage of teachers believed their material and instruction helped students “develop positive social identities and respect diversity” more than the percentage of those teachers who used the materials to identify bias and systemic injustice and how to fight against these issues.

I don’t understand Portland, Oregon.  Maybe you do!  Todd Jaquith, writing for BPR Business & Politics, reports that Portland’s public school system "is looking to inculcate its young students with the pseudo-metaphysics of radical queer gender theory—this based on the findings of Christopher Rufo.  For one thing, the district is now teaching that “the existence of only two sexes is, in fact, “colonized”—by which they apparently mean that the concept of “male” and “female” was invented by a sinister cabal of evil white supremacists in Europe and was subsequently enforced upon unsuspecting natives around the world during the colonial expansion that attended the Age of Discovery.”  Rufo, @realchrisrufo, writes: “The new curriculum translates the principles of academic queer theory into K-12 pedagogy. The premise is simple: privileged heterosexual “white colonizers” have created an oppressive “gender binary” to “exploit racial and sexual minorities.”  Wow!  Who knew?  Rufo, @realchrisrufo, also writes: “[b]eginning in kindergarten, Portland school teachers give anatomy lessons with graphic drawings of children’s genitalia. The lessons refer to “person with a penis” and “person with a vulva,” because some girls have penises, and some boys have vulvas.”

Are schools being encouraged to spy on parents’ communications through social media?  Fox News thinks so!  Todd Jaquith, writing for BPR Business and Politics, provides that Fox News did some sleuthing and discovered that “Summit Learning”—a digital learning platform partially developed by Facebook engineers and promoted by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative—allegedly recommends that “schools monitor parents’ online activity” and “listen in to online conversations involving parents.”  The Summit Learning platform is used by hundreds of schools around the country.  In 2017 when Cheshire Public Schools in Connecticut became a part of the program, parents’ opposition was so fierce that the partnership was terminated.  Summit Learning denies it is using student and parent data for nefarious purposes.  I have requested access to any and all Guilford County school system documents for contracts, grants, or other agreements involving the Summit Learning initiative.

Any one ever heard of the Budding Roses Camp? I wish I hadn’t! It is a summer camp in Portland, Oregon that is offering parents the opportunity to send their kids to “a free, radical social justice camp.”  At this camp, the kids are taught the main proponents of anarchy, such as: (i) how to hate the police, (ii) how to handle being sprayed with tear gas, and (iii) how to talk about racism, gentrification, student activism, gender, and climate change.”  The kids also receive a “Black Lives Matter at School” coloring book. I have heard that psychiatrists and psychologists are refusing to treat patients whose political ideologies are different than their own.  By this, I mean Democrat psychiatrists and psychologists are refusing to accept or continue treatment of patients when these doctors find out these patients are Republicans or conservatives.  But I had not heard that some college anthropologists refuse to classify remains by sex or even broad racial classifications.  These gender activists have formed a group called the “Trans Doe Task Force” to "explore ways in which current standards in forensic human identification do a disservice to people who do not clearly fit the gender binary."  Meaning that the current forensic approach in identifying human remains by determining whether the body is male or female, or even their ethnicity, is either wrong or incomplete.  These gender anthropologists argue that one must know how the corpse identified themselves when alive, even if the corpse is 1000 years old.  Is this the height of stupidity or what?  Andrea Widburg writes in the American Thinker, “[w]hat we're seeing in academia is the intellectual decadence that marked the end-stage Roman Empire or Weimar Germany.  If sane Americans don't pull the culture back from this abyss of fantasy, stupidity, and ignorance, we're doomed.”

Betsy De Vos, former Secretary of Education under President Trump, provides that there are five steps Republicans can take to reform our public education system. They are:

(1) eliminating or reducing the U.S. Department of Education,

 (2) expanding apprenticeship programs to provide additional pathways to educating students,

(3) reversing the Biden Administration’s Title IX changes to prohibit biological men from participating in women’s sports,

(4) ensuring educational freedom; that is, giving parents the ability to send their children to a wider array of schools by allowing students to receive funds to transfer from public schools to different education options such as charter and private schools and homeschooling, and

(5) reforming federal student aid.

The National Federation of Republican Women recently surveyed its members: “Should students be required to pass a U.S. civics exam to graduate from high school”?  More than 98% of respondents indicated “yes” and about 1.5% of the respondents indicated “no.”  One of the respondents wrote this: “Absolutely! If evidence is needed to support the need for young Americans to be educated in civics that evidence is abundant in the uproar over recent Supreme Court decisions, it is obvious that many members of the press, the public and even elected officials have limited understanding of the three branches of our government. They understand neither the structure, function, responsibilities, or limitations of those institutions. How do we expect to maintain a democratic republic if our citizens don't understand what it is or how to live in it? Since that understanding is not congenital, it must be learned, I have been saying for months that the most important elections in this country right now are the local school boards.”  I tend to agree!  Do you agree?  Go here to read more:  https://www.nfrw.org/poll-questions/ArtMID/17476/ArticleID/6892/Week-of-July-11-2022?_zs=AJbLc&_zl=v1HB3.

Don’t blame me!  I went to Duke!

An article at OurPatriot.com, July 17, 2022, reports that the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill, has mapped “out historic gay sex spots”!  Wait!  What?  Yes, UNC at Chapel Hill has “published dozens of colorful maps with particular establishments and locations marked on them.” This project, sponsored by a UNC LGBTQ group, focuses on “shedding light on the dozens of spots where students would meet up on and around campus for sexual intercourse, including that which involved prostitution.”  After positing that the LGBTQ community maybe all about sexual relations, it questions whether the project is fitting for this educational institution.  Even the name of the project—Queerolina—is a play on NC’s name.

On July 12, 2022, Brenda Lebsack, a commentator for the Daily Wire and a teacher, attended the National Education Association (NEA) and came away from the convention after concluding two things:  one, “public schools are no longer a safe place for families who hold traditional values or for families who believe gender (as in male/female binary) is biologically determined,” and two, “the NEA is a lobbying arm of the Democratic Party.”  In the NEA preamble to the program, Ms. Lebsack reports that the NEA claims to be “the national voice for education managed by and for the public good, to advance the cause for ALL individuals,” yet, her observations convinced her that the real goal of the NEA is “for education to be a training ground for political activism, while demonizing anyone—including students and their families—who does not share those same political and sociological beliefs.”  Moreover, she writes, the NEA “does not want public education to be neutral ground in developing critical thinkers with an emphasis on academic achievement.” Of the 110 motions discussed and voted on, only four remotely addressed student academic achievement. Those four dealt with student financial literacy and resources for English learners and language acquisition. Half of the motions dealt with “identity politics, social justice, and ways to promote the goals of the Democratic Party.” Vice President Kamala Harris was the keynote speaker.

On July 12, 2022, the U.S. Department of Education published a notice of proposed rulemaking, titled – “Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Sex in Education Programs or Activities Receiving Federal Financial Assistance.”  The purported purpose the proposed regulations “is to better align the Title IX regulatory requirements with Title IX's nondiscrimination mandate, and to clarify the scope and application of Title IX and the obligation of all schools, including elementary schools, secondary schools, postsecondary institutions, and other recipients that receive Federal financial assistance from the Department (referred to below as recipients or schools) to provide an educational environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex, including through responding to incidents of sex discrimination.”  Given that “sex” is now defined to include “sex stereotypes, sex characteristics, pregnancy or related conditions, sexual orientation, and gender identity,” we all know what this new rule will really mean. A Department of Education “Fact Sheet” confirms that the proposed rule will also “strengthen protections for LGBTQI+ students.”  The entire proposed rule is rather lengthy.  However, a Townhall.com article links to a Department of Education “Fact Sheet” that summarizes the proposed changes.

The Carolina Journal reported yesterday that Governor Roy Cooper vetoed Senate Bill 593—a bill passed by both chambers of the General Assembly by almost unanimous margins in late June and early July. Governor Cooper, vetoed the bill July 11, on grounds that it was “blatantly unconstitutional” for the current General Assembly “…to give more control of education to Boards of Trustees made up of partisan political appointees.”  Say what? North Carolina has three publicly funded schools dedicated to serving blind or deaf students — the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf, the North Carolina School for the Deaf, and the Governor Morehead School for the Blind. Under current law, oversight of the schools comes through the State Board of Education, but S.B. 593 would have switched oversight to local boards of trustees with five total members each — four members appointed by the legislature and one by the governor. Catherine Truitt, Superintendent, Department of Public Instruction, promptly criticized Governor Cooper for the veto, stating that S.B. 593 received “widespread input to reach consensus, including from the Department of Public Instruction, the three current directors of the schools, and from other stakeholders.”  She urged the General Assembly to override the Governor’s veto.

As reported by Townhall.com, the U.S. Department of Education launched a “National Parents and Families Engagement Council" in June 2022 that would “facilitate parent involvement in their children’s education and forge ‘strong and effective relationships’ between families and schools at the local level.”  All the organizations chosen to serve on the council are left-wing organizations.  Conservative organizations, such as Fight for Schools, Parents Defending Education, and America First Legal, have sued the Department of Education for violating Federal law governing the formation of federal advisory committees.  These laws mandate: (i) viewpoint diversity, (ii) open and transparent public meetings, (iii) notice within the Federal Register of the creation of the advisory council, and other requirements.  None of these legal requirements were adhered to in establishing the council.

The word “depravity” is defined as “moral corruption; wickedness.”  It is also viewed as “a corrupt, depraved, or degenerate act or practice, or moral perversion and impairment of virtue and moral principles.”  Its synonyms include:  “corruption · corruptness · vice · perversion · pervertedness · deviance · degeneracy · degradation · immorality · shamelessness · debauchery · dissipation · dissoluteness · turpitude ·  profligacy · licentiousness · lewdness · lasciviousness · salaciousness · lechery · lecherousness · prurience · obscenity · indecency · libertinism · sordidness · wickedness · sinfulness · vileness · baseness · iniquity · nefariousness · criminality · viciousness · brutality · brutishness · vitiation.”  Why do I write this?  The headline from an American Wire story from July 5, 2022, reads that a Bellingham, Washington “school board director touts sexual pleasure classes for 9-year-olds.”  According to the story, this school board director owns a sex shop—Wink Wink—and teaches “sex education classes” for children [ages 9 to 17] on topics such as “sexual anatomy for pleasure” and “safer sex practices for all kinds of sexual activities.”  Maybe you like the word “apathy” better as in many parents seem to be “indifferent” to the idea or practice of exposing their children to sexually based environments!

A showdown is looming in court over dress codes for students.  On one hand, the 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, in the Peltier v. Charter Day School decision, ruled that this North Carolina charter school’s dress code for female students—wear only dresses, skirts, skorts—violates laws on equal protection. Under the ruling, girls can no longer be required to wear dresses.  Compare this with a Texas school board decision that bans female students from wearing dresses, skirts, and blouses.  The Forney, Texas Independent School District, just east of Dallas, new rules go into effect August 11, 22.  Based on their concept of “professionalism,” the Forney ISD officials claim the dress code is “designed to improve student self-esteem, bridge socio-economic differences among students, and promote positive behavior, thereby enhancing school safety and improving the learning environment.” Critics of the dress code claim it is an “attempt to erase gender by reducing apparel to the same articles of clothing for all students.”  So, on the one hand a school—as a state actor--cannot tell students what to wear, but on the other they can tell students what not to wear.  I am so confused!

According to a recent post in The Federalist, “[t]he National Association of Scholars’ (NAS) Civic Alliance [has] launched the ‘American Birthright’ project, a new model of social studies standards ready for adoption in K-12 schools.”  These new standards offer state and local school boards under pressure from left-wing educators the option to recalibrate instruction that prioritizes America’s founding pillars as the fundamental focus of civics education.  According to David Randall, the executive director of Civics Alliance coordinating the effort, much of today’s curricula is “confusing,” “badly written,” and “terribly political,” with an agenda that’s erased the defining concepts of American exceptionalism from the classroom. The American Birthright project, however, has developed a model that is based on “love, liberty, and the law”– that are the touchstones of American social studies instruction.  Further, Randall states that “[f]ar too many schools have wandered from these touchstones. Some educators are so caught up in pedagogical ‘theory’ that they have forgotten that facts come first. Some activists in our schools, public and private alike, are so antagonistic toward our culture, without recognizing what they owe to it, that they seek to erase our worthy history of liberty from the curriculum.”  Moreover, Randall told The Federalist, “[t]he crucial thing is to restore social studies instruction that teaches the story of liberty, the story of our country that is not politicized, [and] that is not unrigorous.”

24/7 vigilance is now required to identify and expose organizations pushing their extreme gender ideology on schools.  Casey Ryan, writing for Townhall.com, identifies at least one more such organization—Gender Spectrum—that has managed to keep a low profile until recently.  Casey Ryan indicates that Gender Spectrum targets “young children” by promoting and hosting online chat rooms for children as young as ten who identify as “trans” and “non-binary.”  Ryan also writes that Gender Spectrum offers consulting services and training for teachers to develop “a core understanding of gender terminology and concepts”, and that it offers “an overview of strategies for implementing gender-inclusive approaches for classroom lesson plans and material.”

As reported in The Federalist this date, former Attorney General William Barr--in a speech to a Christian conference in Chicago, Illinois, on June 25, 2022—stated that public schools are so hostile to Christians, they are “unconstitutional.”  AG Barr told the audience that “U.S. public schools have become hostile to traditional religion while wrestling control of American children’s upbringing from their parents.”  He called this systematic assault by anti-religious forces an “atheocracy” and said anti-religious forces now control the minds of American kids due to their monopoly on our education institutions.”  Public schools are now “secular-progressive madrassas.”  To have a fighting chance to resolve this constitutional and existential crisis in American education is to ensure parents have full school choice and can establish education savings accounts.  Eye opening!

I found myself back at Northern Guilford High School this morning listening to a parent who wanted access to a book that contained explicit sexual scenes restricted to/from his minor children and any other parents who wanted the same.  The book, Life is Funny, by E.R. Frank, was and still is available in the school's library.  The parent didn't want the book taken out of the library.  All he wanted and all he asked for was to restrict minors' access to the book.  He was turned down by a majority of the Media Committee.  One Committee member voted to restrict access.  I hate to say it, but the lesson for me, and I hope for any parent is this:  all-knowing, all-seeing school boards and committees will trump your concerns each and every time without regard to your family beliefs, traditions, or wants, if it contradicts their own.  The book is about eleven young people who find themselves in difficult situations over a seven-year period.  Several Committee members spoke about the book addressing social and cultural issues experienced by others and how important it is to introduce the darker side of the world, i.e., poverty and crime, to students in the middle and upper classes of our society, who, I assume would never learn about it otherwise.  They all saw themselves in the role of teaching other peoples' children about all aspects of life, because, let's face it, many parents won't do it, they presume.  The staff member defending the book spoke about laws surrounding obscenity, about Supreme Court cases interpreting such laws, and about the constitutional rights of students.  This staffer stated that "parents can tell their child what not to read," but they can't tell a school or teacher what books can or should be made available to that child to read.  I don't know what you call it, but I call it hubris.  If hubris doesn't work for you, how about:  conceitedness, pretension, vanity, disdain, insolence, presumption, or self-importance?  So, instead of even considering this parent's reasonable request, this Media Staffer said "no, nil, nix, never, nay, and not."

On June 2, 2022, Chris Pandolfo, Blaze Media/TV, wrote about how the Biden Administration is tying funds for school lunches to force compliance with transgender mandates. In May 2022, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it will interpret federal anti-discrimination law "to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity." Its decision is based on an executive order Biden signed after assuming office in January 2021, as well as the Supreme Court's decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, which found that Title VII protections against sex discrimination extend to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.  State and local agencies, program operators and sponsors that receive funds from Food and Nutrition Services must investigate allegations of discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.  These organizations must also update their non-discrimination policies and signage to include prohibitions against discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.  According to Mr. Pandolfo, what this means is that any recipient of the USDA's Food and Nutrition Services child nutrition programs, including the National School Lunch Program, could lose federal funding if they do not comply with Biden's new interpretation of Title IX.

A preschool teacher at Ballentine Elementary School, Wake County, NC, used LGBTQIA+ themed flash cards to teach colors to children.  One of the flash cards depicted a pregnant man.  The principal was alerted.  She confronted the teacher who confirmed she had been using the flash cards.  It is not known how long these flash cards had been used or if this preschool teacher still teaches at Ballentine Elementary School.

Back in early March 2022, the Education First Alliance of North Carolina, first reported this: “NC Schools Allow Children to Change Their Name and Sex Without Parental Consent.”  What happened?  Sloan Rachmuth, writing for Education First Alliance NC, provided in a post on March 6, 2022:

“The NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI) notified school districts in March of 2021 that PowerSchool’s student information system would display a student’s “preferred name” on school records. LGBTQ activists had lobbied former Superintendent Mark Johnson to make the exact change. These activists promote the idea that “gender” is socially constructed, not biological, and that there are more than two sexes.  In an open letter published to Johnson in March 2019, activists from Southern Equality wrote: “For most transgender students, being confronted with one’s birth name (referred to commonly in the trans community as one’s ‘dead name’) can trigger feelings of anxiety and dysphoria. When the disclosure is made public, they may fear for their safety as well.” Mark Johnson refused to change PowerSchool protocols. [However] Superintendent Truitt not only met Southern Equality’s demand last March, now she has gone further in advancing the ‘Trans’ agenda. Last week, the DPI removed the sex of public-school students from official state records in at least three districts.”  Does anyone know if Guilford County School District is following this lead?

The Department of Education, State of Maine, hosted a video for kindergarteners that stated that "a doctor can make a mistake about a baby's gender."  The video has been taken down but is still available for viewing.  This particular video is one of about 400 optional "instructional clips" developed by teachers for use in remote learning.  In the video, the teacher defines the words, "lesbian", "gay", "bisexual", and "transgender."  With respect to a transgendered person, the teacher tells the kindergarteners, "...when a baby is born, the doctors will tell the parents what gender they think that baby is...but some people when they get a little bit older realize what the doctors said was not right."  The teacher also tells the kindergarteners that the "plus sign (+)" at the end of LGBT stands for "a lot of other people who love in ways that society has not always allowed."  This video was not taken down until after the Democrat Governor of the State was featured in a Republican ad endorsing the video.  My question:  "Does the "+" sign represent "pedophiles"?

I previously reported on this controversy several days ago.

But this morning at 7 am, I was sitting in the parking lot of Northern Guilford High School, waiting to get in line to attend a Media Technology Advisory Committee (I think this is the name) meeting called for the purpose of discussing whether the book, "Salvage the Bones", by author Jesmyn Ward, was   appropriate for an AP English class in which minors attended.  Two parents claimed several passages within the book contained explicit sex scenes between a 19 year old male and a 15 year old female. Those sexually explicit passages were read by these parents.  The room in which the attendees sat held eighty-three (83) seats.  More than 90% of those seats were taken by high school students, who gestured wildly with their hands when a speaker said something with which they agreed.  Many parents could not get in.  After these two parents spoke, the teacher was allowed to speak.  She did so, praising the book.  She spoke of the complexity of the subject matter, which dealt with other issues too, like overcoming family tragedy.  The setting is the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  The teacher also indicated she assigned the book because of the development of its characters, and the fact that the book was awarded a 2011 National Book for Fiction.  Apparently, the young 15-year-old finds her strength and her voice through the unfolding tragedies and her sexual trysts.  The teacher then showed a podcast of the author, a young black woman, speaking of why she wrote the book and why it is not obscene.  Members of the Committee were then allowed to voice their own opinions on the content of the book.  Descriptions, such as, "beautifully written," and   "it does shock on first reading, but the more you read, the more comfortable you become" were spoken by Committee members.  So were, "the book is not pornographic," and "it exposes us to see new ideas," and we must see the 'inequalities in our society and that experienced by others."  Time ran out, so there will be one more meeting at which the Committee will rule.  So, you tell me:  sexually explicit passages that are pornographic, or a beautifully written fictional account deserving to be read and studied and read by minors in an AP English class?  The legal definition of pornography is:  "material that depicts nudity or sexual acts for the purpose of sexual stimulation".  [See Cornell Law School, Legal Institute Library.]

The headlines of a May 13, 2022, "The Federalist" article by Chad Felix Greene, reads - "Left-wing Teachers Ditch Teaching to Indoctrinate Kids About Sex Against Parents' Will."  Mr. Greene writes about several examples of LGBT activist teachers:

  • A middle school art teacher in Cape Coral, Florida, says that a discussion occurred in class in which students "volunteered" details about their sexuality and gender identity.  In return, she shared details about her own sexuality and then asked her students to draw pictures.

  • In San Francisco, a teacher told other teachers to defy parents and to indicate that the teacher will refer to the child by whatever name and pronouns that the child prefers.

  • And Mr. Greene highlights a "Libs of Tiktok" example where the teacher came out to peers, supervisors, and students dressed up as a woman with a full beard.

According to Mr. Greene, many teachers feel an obligation and perhaps entitlement to use "their classroom as a group therapy session," in which "they can share secrets [with their peers."]  These young students are their peers?

Tuesday, May 10, 2022, I attended a Guilford County School Board meeting.  I met a young mother with two children in Northern Guilford High School.  We started to talk.  She told me about the reading assignment the teacher had given students to read in their AP English class.  That assignment was to read the book, "Salvage the Bones," by Jesmyn Ward.  This mother learned that several passages within the book contained sexually explicit material between a supposed 15-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man.  She was livid, and she spoke to the teacher and the principal who she says ignored her concerns.  She had hoped to speak at the School Board meeting but could not because she had not registered to speak.  However, she is preparing to speak to that high school's MTAC Library Committee either today at 8 pm or next Thursday, May 19, 2020.   Please support this mother and all other mothers and fathers fighting the same fight!

Update:  The May 12, 2022, meeting with the MTAC Library Committee was cancelled.  Please determine if the May 19 meeting is still on and the time.  It could be as early as 8 am.  Moreover, on May 12 or May 13, the Rhino Times published a report on this incident too.

Update:  The meeting is now scheduled for Thursday, May 19, 2022, starting at 8 am (but get there by 7 am).  Seating is limited.  Police checking IDs.  Location:  Northern Guilford High School, 7101 Spencer-Dixon Road, Greensboro, NC.

Planned Parenthood is in the gender transition business, in addition to providing abortions.  According to Jared Eckert and Emma Sofia Mull, writing in The Federalist, "Planned Parenthood has offered since 2017 access to cross-sex hormones, promotion of gender ideology in sex ed programs, and has established 'well-being centers' in local high schools.'"  Planned Parenthood has hundreds of clinics in more than 40 states providing these services.  Thousands of kids are getting hormone treatments.  Given that 33 states plus Washington, D.C. have laws that allow minors to obtain routine health care without parental consent, especially where gender affirming care is considered medically necessary, minors may be able to transition without parents knowing.

On April 25, 2022, Andrea Widburg wrote an article, published at AmericanThinker.com, reporting that the State of Florida took another brilliant step toward “righting wrongs in education. In the past year, Florida has blocked universities from censoring conservative political views, banned communist-controlled Confucius Institutes from campuses, mandated that high school students learn financial literacy, banned the teaching of CRT in public schools, and passed the “Parental Rights in Education” bill preventing teachers from instructing their 5–8-year-old students about sexuality. Now the State has limited tenure at Florida public universities. Every 5 years, tenure must be reviewed, and maybe renewed, by the university’s Board of Trustees. Why does this matter? According to the author, every single bad idea that is ripping America apart today originated or was incubated in academia. Think Critical Race Theory!

According to a May 2, 2022, Heritage Impact article, the Biden Administration proposed a rule that would force health insurance plans under Obamacare to cover experimental drugs and surgeries. The insurance premiums would cover puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, hysterectomies on healthy women, breast implants in men, and other cross-sex surgeries on anyone, including children. However, after the Heritage Foundation submitted formal comments against the proposed rule and led a coalition of other experts and policy advocates to meet with the Office of Management and Budget, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) jettisoned the transgender mandate from the proposed rule. California’s second draft of its new curriculum framework for K-12 mathematics is not much better than its first draft. Math instruction is politicized by inserting environmental and social justice into the curriculum having students solve problems that result in social inequalities. Clearly, California rejects the notion that math is a neutral discipline. In the second draft, California posits that the goal of teaching math is “to promote racial justice.” The framework of the new curriculum is referred to as trauma-induced pedagogy, which according to education officials “is the idea that students are disabled emotionally by a fascist, sexist, violent society rules by a capitalist class and that therefore teaching should be therapeutic.”

The Office of Population Affairs, Department of Health and Human Services released an information sheet on gender-affirming care for youth. There are four specific types of care:

1. Social affirmation adopting gender-affirmation hairstyles, clothing, name, gender pronouns, restroom usage, etc. (Social affirmation is reversible.)

2. Use of puberty blockers. (Puberty blockers are reversible but only if puberty has already started; not reversible if puberty blockers are started before puberty.)

3. Use of hormone therapy. (The info sheet indicates hormone therapy is partially reversible. But the info sheet does not indicate the basis for their determination that its use is partially reversible.)

4. Gender affirming surgeries. (Not reversible)
